John Burton Program
The John Burton Program is an educational program established in 2009 by Paul Stankard to promote excellence in flameworked glass. The Program gets its name from John Burton, a physicist working artistically with borosilicate in the 1960’s. Burton’s seminal work and research making colored borosilicate glass and his dedication to educating students in the art, science and excellence of artistic borosilicate is the vision of the John Burton Program.
The JBP offers a web based curriculum of independent study, seminars, and houses an online library. The Program will also mount juried exhibitions, events and sales in various locations and galleries around the country. The first planned event will feature contemporary dioramas, reminiscent of the Never figurines of the 18th century.
Enrollment for the next section, a 15 week class starting on January 11th, is currently in progress. The curriculum involves reading and writing about art and the philosophy of art, a survey of artists and research, and discussions about art, craft and design. Discussions will be facilitated by Paul Stankard and take place on Monday evenings in conference calls that last about an hour and a half. There will be two guest speakers during the course as well.
Paul Stankard will also bring in gallery curators and established glass artists to share their expertise regarding the business aspects of art making. Northstar Glass has donated $2500 worth of colored borosilicate to be given away to 10 students of the Program.
